Water According to Ovid

Santa Fe Art Institute, Santa Fe, New Mexico, June 2005
This pair of large color photographs (printed at 20″ x 30″) addresses the transitional qualities of water. The images were both created during a residency in northern Vermont where water is abundant and plentiful. Coming from the sever drought in New Mexico, I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of water around me and often felt inverted or out of my element in this lush, wet environment. Although none of the myths from Ovid’s Metamorphosis are recreated directly in these images, the stories of Halcion and Narcissus come to mind as the body in each image is turn upside down or transformed by its interaction with the water around it.
